On the 27th June 2018, over 2000 children from the South West took part in The Big Bang Fair South West, which was being held at the UWE Bristol Exhibition and Conference Centre in Bristol. The Big Bang Fair South West is the biggest celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in the region and Stirling was delighted to be Silver Sponsors at the event.
“This is the first-time that Stirling has been involved in the Big Bang programme. We felt that it would be a good fit within the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and STEM strategy, which aims to inspire the next generation of engineers” commented Vanessa Earlie, Stirling’s CSR Manager, “Stirling is passionate about engineering and the Big Bang gave us the opportunity to show young people why a career in engineering can be a creative and interesting vocation. We really wanted to challenge any misconceptions the show attendees had about engineering.”
As the Big Bang is an interactive show, Stirling’s booth featured our top of the range pilot training and simulation kit for the students to try out and discover the skills needed to fly a fighter jet. In addition to the pilot training and simulation kit, we challenged our stand visitors to design and build the best paper aeroplane that could be tested on our electric plane launcher. We also really wanted the Big Bang attendees to question what engineering means to them and encourage thought around the subject. Our overarching aim was to encourage all students to consider a career in engineering and understand that it covers many disciplines. Students wrote down their thoughts on post-it notes, which were stuck on the walls of our stand. We selected a student’s response and awarded a prize of a ‘We the Curious” family ticket.
GIRLS IN STEM AWARD
As Silver Sponsors at the event, we chose to sponsor the ‘Girls in STEM Award’. On selecting this award, Hollie Gibson, HR Manager, said: “Encouraging girls into STEM is key for creating a diverse workforce. At Stirling, we are determined to inspire young students to consider a career in engineering”.
