Expert consulting from our Marine engineers
Stirling Dynamics provides high-end engineering and consultancy services which support complex design and development programmes in the marine industries – including those with demanding safety-critical requirements. We have built an enviable reputation in submarine autopilots within platform management systems (PMS) and offer an advanced modelling and simulation capability. Once deployed, our engineers can provide a full range of support services, including submarine control solutions, marine propulsion, computational fluid dynamics and dynamic systems modelling.
Core Capabilities
Simulation and Control
The Simulation and Control capability group operates across all disciplines in the marine sector. We model all aspects of marine systems and their environments, building integrated models that can be used to simulate all aspects of a system’s performance and which range from offline tools for performance and safety analysis to real-time simulations for training and Hardware-in-the-Loop environments. Our understanding of surface and sub-surface vessel dynamics allows us to develop and implement control laws for a wide variety of marine system platforms.
Systems and Safety
The Systems and Safety capability group works closely with our customers to deliver their complex systems from requirements definition all the way through to verification and validation, and our engineers have significant experience in the definition, integration, and safety assessment of systems. Our systems safety capability covers the full development process including safety-critical software and whole boat safety assessments.
Fluid Dynamics
The Structural and Fluid Dynamics capability group has the ability to model and analyse a range of structures and fluid-structure interactions. In the marine sector, bringing together structural modelling with hydrodynamic analysis (both CFD and empirical methods) allows us to build integrated models to analyse complex dynamic behaviours, above and below the surface. The group has extensive experience in modelling the fluid effects on a wide range of platforms, from surface ships to submarines, including hydrodynamic, hydrostatic, sea state and other environmental aspects.
Software Development
The Software Engineering capability group develop real-time safety critical software for control and instrumentation systems used in the marine industries. The team consists of software engineers with significant experience working in multidisciplinary product development teams. Our software engineering capability works very closely with our other engineering and project management capabilities to ensure we achieve optimum integrated solutions for our customers.
Electromechanical Design
Within Electromechanical Design, Stirling Dynamics brings together a team with experience in mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering with the knowledge of CAD and stress analysis. We have a range of design skills to support both our own products and those of our customers, including the ability to reverse-engineer existing designs. Our engineers also develop new designs to support many of our clients who then take these designs forward to manufacture.

Marine FAQs
Do you have any questions about our Marine services? We have you covered.
Have you worked on submarine Platform Management Systems?
Yes, we have built an enviable reputation in submarine autopilots within platform management systems (PMS). Our advanced steering, diving and hover solutions are active across a diverse range of platforms from diesel-electric patrol to the nuclear-powered fleet submarines.
What boats have you worked on?
We’ve worked on platforms that include the Royal Navy SSN Class (autopilot), Trafalgar Class (Slow Speed Control); Swiftsure Class (Slow Speed Control); U209 (autopilot); U212A (autopilot); U214 (autopilot); Dolphin AIP (autopilot) and Jangbogo III (autopilot and hover).
Do you work on-site or off-site?
Depending on customer and security requirements, we can do either or a blended hybrid of both. We pride ourselves on being extremely agile and flexible.
Can you develop an overall hydro-mechanical architecture for my product?
Absolutely, we can perform an architecture and model the performance so that you can tweak the system design to optimise for the desired functionality and performance needs. We can also develop the systems engineering design to control the system, sensing and measurement solutions to the highest level of safety criticality.
What can you tell me about how Stirling Dynamics is learning from the different domains of Air, Land, Sea, Space and Cyberspace?
At Stirling Dynamics, and with our parent company Expleo, we work across all these domains and our staff have the opportunity to work in each of them. In fact, many of our team have brought benefits across one domain to serve another. Model-based systems engineering is just one area; we are cross-fertilising the domains and our latest whitepaper “Utilising MBSE for Safety-Critical Software” can be downloaded here.
